WIP PREVIEW: Lara Reborn Contest Entry 1 by Eddy-Shinjuku WIP PREVIEW: Lara Reborn Contest Entry 1 by Eddy-Shinjuku
THIS PREVIEW IS SEVERELY RE-SIZED FOR VIEWING PURPOSE ONLY, THE REAL ARTWORK IS ABOVE 7000X12000++ pixels, that in layman's term is the print size that could cover an average bedroom door.
WORKING HOURS: 120+ hours and counting

A - Closes up of Lara, I'm going for details and textures. All is there, the compulsory glistening, bruised, bloody, and dirty skin. Detailed hair, face, etc. etc.
NEED to work on her expression, she looks like she's enjoying the sadistic environment too much, good for her, but it's makes the environment not as dangerous as depicted. Or perhaps this IS her playground....

B - A low res of the overview of the artwork (don't mind the flattened feel of it), don't want to give away too much for now as things are ever changing :D
still has lots of improvement needed in terms of the 'depth of field', background correction, and color complimentary etc. etc.
I also feels it's lacking the bad guys, this new Tomb Raider game are swarmed with them, so they are integral in the picture. I am thinking of them chasing her and having arrows and bullets wizzes close to her...

C - I'm going with the Fibonacci spiral for composition to give flow, the conventional rule of thirds (3x3 grid) is great, but a tad static and lacks dynamism for something 'action-y'. I need strong elements of cinematography.
For the lack of experience, I make up of it with math and geometry

To my viewers and friends, I've been very busy despite the inactivity @ dA.
This work is massive. The effort is equivalent of 6-7 of my latest artworks jammed packed in this one piece.

The stakes are high as heaps of talented artists are joining this contest. At my current skill, I wouldn't stand a chance; I need to reinvent myself, far beyond my current artworks - so I took a crash course in matte painting lessons and other intensive painting "bootcamps" to pretty much 'level up', resulting in me missing entirely @ Deviantart. Hope to come back after mid March.

Great to hear this! Hope you've checked out the completed work: [link]
though it has been reduce in size for easy view in Deviantart. If you have the time, do view my 2nd entry: [link]

Since it was a competition, I was willing to spent 2-3 hours every night for 1 month to complete it, unfortunately the judges didn't chose it. ^^;
So a little sad it didn't make the semi-final.

7000x12000px??? my god that was big!!! my biggest artwork I ever done is 7000 px max and the saving process was pain in the ass!! I love how lara look in this, that details!!! and the chaotic atmosphere is sick!! even though there is so many things in this composition, Lara definitely is center of attention here, my eyes goes right to her!! you probably want o fix her expression as you mention above, make her more aggressive, like she going to kill somebody.

its a good things that you take a matte paintings lesson, it definitely show in this artwork :).
and yes the stakes are high, I already seen a few entry that way too cool compared too mine. even thought there is very small chances to win, to tell you the truth I learn hell a lot of stuff from making artwork for this competition, so really its a good learning experiences for everybody :)

My God I just can't wait for this game!!! probably getting this game on saturday!!

The high res due to 300dpi/ppi, at a web browsing ppi of 72 it would be under 6000px. I wasn't sure what the rule meant by 'printable', so to played it safe and gone with 300.
Yup, coincidentally I upgrade my PC rig with up to 16GB ram, so it managed to keep up with the document size, which just hit 3GB :faint:

Yes, the expression determines the whole piece; right now she's looking quite juvenile lol
Btw, from observations I figured this new Lara likes to pose in this unusual contorting way, she twists, slithers, and keeps very low center gravity lol, which is far beyond the classic barrel-rolling elegant gymnast of the 'old' Lara ;p

I LOVE IT! Here it tells the viewers that she's edging forward while being evasive of danger - it's something that I picked after watching hours of the gaming footage huhu; IMO it's really fitting - she adapts this animal-like movement sort of to speak.

YES, get the game quick! It will definitely inspire during the final days of the deadline :D

I see, my PC can't support such a big file, my maximum psd file only 400mb further than that make my pc hang like crazy! and I keep max 5 to 7 layer. 3Gb I am pretty sure it takes forever to load in my pc lol

you right, I watch the gameplay, and the way she dodge an attack is very different from previous TR game, less elegant and more realistic I must say. God, the more I watch her, the more I in love with her, she is so beautiful and sexy even covered with dirt and blood. its like 3 years I waiting for this game and finally it come to an end!!

Man I bought the game last night and it's the most epic thing ever! (Plus on PC the graphic setting supreme, there's a setting for hair physics that is not in XBOX360 plus all those DX11 goodies) :faint:
You must get the game asap, I've notice soo much flaws is depicting my artwork after played only the first 2 hours of this game. Specifically the atmosphere and the face.

Damn, after waited soo long, it feels unreal getting to play this game lol
It gave me goosebumps, voice acting melts your mind btw :squee:

How's progress btw bro?
Just so you know the deadline in our local time is around 1pm next Friday, hope you spared couple days for revision because there are always errors spotted days after completion, so hope you are done days before the actual deadline
I'm working on the 2nd piece right now, will post the WIP this weekend, I'm deciding whether to include Lara's mentor (Ross) and her friends or just her alone. When you play the game, first thing you'll notice she's no longer a loner like the old Lara, she got support and friends this time. My point, do consider them as well, I'm certain one of the judge (a Director who's involved in the making of the game) would be pleased if an artist trying to promo the game as a whole :D

Perhaps I'm beyond done, but the pressure may elude me into thinking I'll never get it completed lol - I'm at the stage I need to be careful of not overdoing it as it may do harm. don't want to make a dish where the condiments overpowers the main feature sort of to speak

This is a one time dream of a contest to me, it's as if the gods of fanart blessed me with this gift - so I give everything as a tribute ;p

Well, yeah, I can understand that :) It looks complete to me, but I figure you know best about what to do to your art. And yes I have that fear oftentimes myself, although my works are never as complex as yours :)

Yeah, I figured this would be up your alley! I looked at the other submissions, and while there are some great artists who have entered to compete, I still think yours is actually the best so far. Good luck with it, and tbh you have a really great shot at winning :)

:faint: You do make us waiting for this piece to the very end, don't you? ;) And, duh, what to say more? After you have been spending so countless hours on your delicious masterpiece :D, you nicely pointed out some characteristics in your own summary. The part about her expression brought a smile on my face. Well, survivor may be yet to be born... or she may have been born already in the artwork. ;) Both approaches are correct with the game, so it's only a matter of personal choice what you want to target. :target: I'm loving your picture already, and felt so little reading about all those technical details of art designing. :omg:  The image is as detailed as much as it could be. Loving its dynamism, and Lara's hair. And together with the compound background, it totally feels the game. 8-) And when I read you're yet to put baddies there as well... :faint: It's got everything! Words of admiration, respect, and good luck wishing for all that it represents and your attitude to the contest! :w00t:

Sorry for the late reply, I've restricted myself from any interneting leisure time and utilize every single minute for this contest.
Yes, I may keep her expression, but add realistic minor forehead wrinkling to give a more aggressive look. It's best to be a bit creative than to adhere strictly to the canon Lara - so this is a attempt to capture realism and create an 'alternate' face which should rival those promo arts ones.
Though I didn't stray off that far, still keeping her facial features

I'm currently working on the 2nd artwork, it will be a bit subtle, but still epic ;p
It will be a symphonic orgy of light, this one :D
As you know light is my forte, so this already got me drooling haha
You'll see it soon if I could post the WIP on Sunday. I'm going for a more innocent and friendly-cute looking Lara; if you are playing the game already, you'll notice she's pretty much a sweetheart, so I'm gonna gun for this concept. Plus I have yet to see a friendly looking Lara in the other entrees, I supposed it's good to create myself a niche, easy for the judges to tell apart lolol

For sheer effort and hardwork alone, you should win this. Trust me, I am a HUGE fan of your works MAINLY because there is so much detail in them, but this one takes the cake. It makes me just cower in shame as I cannot even produce 1 percent of this awesomeness, as I am not patient enough to sit on a piece for over a 100 hours...
And to think that you put the title as "Entry 1" ??? What, are you planning on MORE than one???

PS: I miss you so much Sensei xD Hope you win this thing!

I think you may have underestimated the competition, do check out the entrees from other artistes here in dA: [link]
At such high stakes, any of these more experienced artist than myself would take the prize. I'm actually feeling no were near secure lol

Yeah, just like a parachute, I will have a backup artwork if this one doesn't fair well. But I'm pissed that there's isn't enough time to pull off something ambitious, not really keen onto making something pedestrian...only 10+ days left :faint:

After I'm done with this, I'll pretty much grown into a different artist and would really like to change my gallery
Sorry that I'd been literally MIA'ed from dA, can't afford to use the free time for leisure, this is serious business! :katana:

PS: Could you point me to some good tutorials from what you have learnt? I want to up my game in digital art as well... And as per my skillset, improving on backgrounds and detailing would be great.

For a quick start, google 'Matte Painting tutorial'.
This is an atmospheric and environmental style specifically for background and it's an art style of it's own. Technique most commonly used is Atmospheric perspective - this means the further the object, the 'foggier' it gets. My WIP isn't the best example because I have yet to refine the fog/mist.

While far objects gets lighten in value, the closer objects and foreground gets darker in value. This is of course general terms, depends of the light source

oh yeah i know matte painting ^_^ We 3D artists use it all the time in compositing ^_^
I was wondering if you had done any further training in detailing part......

Yup, matte painting to start off, then start putting down pure painterly details as fit.

Well, first of all get a big monitor (24 inch) and a powerful PC so you can run a massive canvas ;p
Closeup into the BG, there are just blobs and silhouette mostly lol
She's 1:1 scale, so it's like painting a real human face size, that's enough real estate to include all the human facial features.
In fact, the canvas is soo big that I summoned the grid in Photoshop to keep tracks of the regions
